1. Executive Summary
This technology profile describes a millimeter-stroke microelectromechanical (MEMS) electromagnetic actuator designed to enable stable optical beam steering within compact module-level systems. The device combines multiple folded silicon beams with a Differential Motion Rejection structure and a rigid frame to reconcile two typically conflicting requirements: large in-plane displacement and high out-of-plane stability. By integrating an electromagnetic drive with structural stiffness engineering, the actuator achieves dynamic strokes exceeding 600 micrometers and a primary resonant frequency around 31 Hz. Experimental validation shows that out-of-plane displacement at resonance is reduced by approximately 97 percent compared to a baseline configuration without the stabilizing structures. Static stiffness in the vertical direction increases by more than fifty times, while displacement crosstalk between axes falls below 0.3 percent. These improvements allow precise redirection of optical paths with deflection angles of about plus or minus 21 degrees. The design addresses the practical needs of free-space optical interconnects, where alignment accuracy, packaging constraints, and switching reliability are critical. The actuator operates with low driving voltages and maintains linear displacement behavior within its operating range. The approach is particularly relevant for data center modules, optical switching platforms, and advanced sensing systems that require compact, reconfigurable optical routing. The technology demonstrates a clear pathway from laboratory validation to system integration in high-density communication environments.
